Two Blessed Robert Sutton Catholic Voluntary Academy pupils are celebrating after being selected as winners of a Christmas card competition which attracted hundreds of entries.

Blessa Porras and Jessica Taylor were two of the four winners of the competition which was open to pupils across the St Ralph Sherwin Catholic Multi Academy Trust, a partnership of 25 Catholic Voluntary Academies across the Diocese of Nottingham.

Pupils were invited to submit a design of their choosing and alongside Blessa and Jessica, winning entries also came from the Reception Class at St Mary’s CVA in Marple Bridge and St Thomas’ CVA in Ilkeston.

Sean McClafferty, Trust CEO, attended an Act of Worship at Blessed Robert Sutton CVA, in Burton, and presented Blessa and Jessica with their winning designs on a Trust Christmas card. These will be sent to all parents and staff at the school. The girls also received a certificate and a voucher.

Entries were judged by Mr McClafferty, Trust Chair Jacqueline Rodden and Joe Hopkins, the Trust’s Lead Lay Chaplain.

Mr McClafferty said: “We received over 250 entries this year and the standard was extremely high which made our job as judges very difficult. It is quite unusual to have two winning cards from one school but we were so impressed by the quality of Jessica and Blessa’s wonderful designs. We would like to thank them for taking part and congratulate them on being two of the four winners of our competition; they should feel very proud of their achievement.”

Blessa said she was shocked to find out that she was a winner.

She said: “I didn’t know exactly what design I was going to do at first; I didn’t like the first one I did. I’d seen a similar picture online so I tried to do that in my own style. I was surprised to have won!”.

Jessica said she was proud to have created a winning design.

She said: “I was trying to show the true meaning of Christmas in my design. I was a bit shocked to win but I was happy; I definitely wasn’t expecting it.”

Head of Art, Hannah Crowther, said: “Congratulations to the winners of the annual Christmas card competition. Blessa and Jess’ entries were really individual and creative and show a great talent. I’m incredibly proud of the hard work all of our students put into their entries.”
