Dear Parents, Carers & Students

We are at the end of another half term – a half term where Covid seems finally to be in retreat. The Covid situation in and around the school is very positive with no new cases. Our students have continued to respond extremely well to the challenges they have faced over recent weeks. It is also encouraging to see so many of them taking advantage of the opportunities presented by being back in normal teaching classrooms and now having access to a range of extra-curricular and enrichment opportunities. Well done! We look forward to the final half term and the further opportunities this will bring.

Year 11 Leavers Day

Today we saw Year 11 mark their final day at school. Thank you to each and every one of them who have made us so proud through everything they have navigated. They have been dealt a difficult hand over the last year but have approached it with positivity and resilience – well done Year 11. Our Year 11 have been working tirelessly throughout March, April and May to complete their assessments used for their Teacher Assessed Grades (TAGs). The students have now completed 5 full rounds of assessment in all their subjects and have done so with ambition and resilience throughout. I also want to thank the teaching team in Year 11 for their efforts at this time. As a result of the national decision to cancel GCSEs and create an in-school TAG process, a great deal more marking and moderating has had to be completed by the team at BRS. Staff have literally spent hours ensuring marking is accurate and complete and have shown total dedication to this additional load. As we say goodbye to our oldest Year 11 students, our next cohort of Year 10 students take on the responsibility of being in their final year of secondary education. With this in mind, from Monday 14th June our Year 10 students will be completing a set of mock exams.

Health and Safety Updates

All Covid safety precautions remain in place until at least 21st June. When the next lockdown announcement is made in June, and if the national Covid restrictions are removed, we intend to return to our normal, pre-Covid, operations as soon as we can afterwards. This announcement is expected on 14th June and we hope to be able to return to our normal day plans, rooming, and timetable by the start of July at the latest, although some Covid restrictions may be removed earlier.

Parents Evenings – Online Appointment Booking

Year 7, 8 and 9 – On Thursday 24th June, we will holding an Academic Review Day (ARD) for Year 7, 8 and 9. This will be a virtual event.

Year 10 – On Thursday 8th July, we will be holding an Academic Review Day (ARD) for Year 10. This will be a virtual event.

The aim of both of these events is to give parents, students and Form/teachers the opportunity to discuss academic performance and progress towards their final grades. To enable more lengthy discussions to take place between staff and students, the school day will finish for students at 12.50 pm in order to facilitate this event. A letter and instructions for how you can book your appointments will be shared after half term.

Free School Meal Voucher

Staffordshire County Council will be providing all students who receive FSM with a £15 voucher to support them over the May Half term holiday. This voucher can be redeemed at the supermarket of choice for the family. Over the past week, our Admin team have emailed these voucher codes out to parents and followed this up with a phone call to check they have received the voucher and to ensure there are no issues. If you have not received the voucher or have any issues with regard to FSM, please contact laura.wilson@robertsutton.staffs.sch.uk

Staffing Updates

I am delighted to announce that, following interviews, we have appointed Mr Jake Heath to the post of permanent Assistant Headteacher. Mr Heath has done an excellent job over the last 24 months, especially during such a difficult time for our school. I am sure you will all join me in congratulating him on his appointment.

Thank you as always for your ongoing support. It has been a difficult year for us all and we are very grateful for the support we have received from the BRS Community.

Best wishes and take care

Laura O’Leary
